1. What's your practice focus and what kind of clients knock on your door ?
My practice focuses on destigmatizing mental health in communities of color. The type of clients who knock on my door are individuals who have tried their methods of healing but want differently. My clients are tired of feeling stuck so they chose to take control of their life. I provide a judgement free environment full of empathy and understanding. We all have our challenges in life but how we choose to embrace ourselves and learn from them determines who we are.
2. Tell us about yourself.
I am passionate about speaking and inspiring individuals to take charge of their mental and physical health. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Health Coach that specializes in anger management, trauma, and group facilitation. In 2021, after taking the COVID-19 vaccine I began suffering from seizures. I was diagnosed with epilepsy which opened my eyes to the lack of funding, resources, and services for individuals with disabilities. My disability motivates me to help others.
3. Tell us the story of a patient who you are most proud of helping.
My client who I am most proud of was an African American male who I have worked with for about two years. This client struggled with anxiety for years however did not embrace therapy out of fear of being stigmatized as "soft". As an African American we sometimes feel as if we are supposed to face adversity and challenges with a smile on our face. We are not given the same grace to hurt or struggle with our mental health. My client taking initiative to seek help inspired me to be a safe space.
4. What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a practitioner in private practice?
The hardest challenge that comes with having a private practice is my disability. Unfortunately, I am unable to take on as many clients, I sometimes have to cancel appointments last minute when I do not feel well, and I cannot drive so most of my appointments have to be virtual. I love being a therapist and making a difference and having a disability has shown me my strength can empower others. Regardless of the barriers I face, I keep pushing to be in a position to help others.
